cardiac effects of new molecules.

Zebrafish is an emerging model system for cardiovascular drug discovery because the electrical properties of the zebra fish heart are remarkably similar to those of the human heart. Drugs absorbed rapidly into the zebra fish circulation, reaching the heart in seconds. Therefore the zebra fish could be an appropriate model for studying cardiac effects of new drugs.
The ZEBRASYS, which is a brand-new innovation of Experimetria Ltd, was developed in order to establish a high throughput system is able for rapid and cost effective investigation of cardiac side effects of a vast number of molecules during short time.
The fish should be immobilized for recording ECG, it could be done with the use of clove oil and it is not necessary to paralyze them with any kind of toxins. Zebra fish then placed in a damp sponge, and orally perfused with saline solution through a perfusion needle is placed into the oral cavity. The electrical activity of the heart is detected through two electrodes, which are inserted in the ventral midline.
The amplified ECG curves can be recorded in the well-known Experimetria Haemosys software, which also allows their detailed analysis even automatically.
Cost-effectiveness and simple use, they were the crucial questions during the development of ZEBRASYS. Several measurements can be performed in one set-up, each after each, with minimal delay. Trained technicians, PhD students and post docs can equally use it in industrial or in even academic environment.
